The sundial of ancient mathematicians and astronomers
The skaphe is probably one of the oldest types of sundial. Its dial is located in a hollow sphere. In the center of the sphere sits the gnomon, the tip of which casts its shadow along the drawn lines.
The spherical collecting surface compensates for the non-uniform shadow movement on flat surfaces.
The temporal hours can be read from the hour lines. These do not correspond to our current measurement of equinoctial hours.

Until the Middle Ages, the “daylight”, i.e. the time from sunrise to sunset, was divided into 12 equal sections. The first temporal hour begins at sunrise.
The temporal hour, which is also called the “temporal hour”, is not the same length over the year due to the different duration of sunshine. In summer the hours are longer, in winter the hours are shorter.
