The Roman scaphe was a further development of the scaphe invented by Erasthones around 300 BC. In contrast to a closed scaphe, the Roman scaphe is only half a circle.
The gnomon is no longer positioned vertically in the middle, but horizontally. This makes it easier to read from the front.
